The PAYMENTINSIDER provides articles, posts, and whitepapers on the Payment Industry, including this article, Merchant Service Review Sites – Be Careful, with the goal of creating transparency in this marketplace.

Merchant Service Review Sites – Be Careful

Searching for a new merchant services provider? Want feedback or need some advice on which provider to choose? A logical place to search for these answers would be a site or resource that provides a breakdown of services and offers reviews for the multitude of companies that offer merchant services.

However, merchants should be very careful when using these sites that offer reviews on the top merchant service providers or payment processors. Oftentimes, these sites use pay-for-placement or only review merchant service providers that offer a revenue sharing deal, commonly through an affiliate program. These aren’t unbiased reviews – they’re more of a complex marketing scheme.

Furthermore, some of these review sites only differentiate a potential merchant service provider based on the processing fees.

The other criteria used to review these merchant service providers is almost always offered by each reviewed company. Does the provider allow for MasterCard transactions? Check… Does the provider offer a merchant account? Well, gee, I would hope so… Does the account allow for Address Verification? You bet it does…

Here’s a full list of one review site’s criteria:

  • Payment Gateway
  • Virtual Terminal
  • Merchant Account
  • Credit Card Swipers
  • Offers eCheck
  • Shopping Cart Available
  • Recurring Billing
  • Fraud Protection
  • Address Verification
  • Real Time Processing
  • SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
  • CVV2 (Three Digits)

Accepted Credit Cards

  • Visa
  • Master Card
  • American Express
  • Discover
  • Debit

Help & Support

  • 24/7
  • Online Chat

These are hardly review worthy criteria, as nearly all providers will offer and support this overly basic list. As for their most prominent item used for review / comparison – provider pricing – well, every merchant service provider has the ability to price a merchant at its discretion. And it’s done so based on many factors, including industry, volume, and exposure to risk, just to name a few. So, don’t be misled by a site claiming to offer unbiased reviews. They most likely have their own interests in mind when ranking these providers.

It’s best to talk with other merchants about their experiences with a provider and seek pricing from multiple merchant service providers.

Even still, you may be overpaying for these services, as the payment industry is complex and most of the information a merchant obtains regarding these services comes directly from the providers. It’s why we believe so strongly in the services we provide. VeriProcess is not a payment processor or merchant service provider; we are a consultancy and advisory firm working on behalf of merchants. Our services do not require a change in payment providers and our earnings are derived from your measurable savings, aligning our interests directly with yours.
